Nice Hinterland: 4 Best Day Trips from Nice
Beyond the coastline, the Alpes-Maritimes region offers a stunning variety of landscapes and heritage sites accessible within a day from Nice. From medieval villages and mountain valleys to historic railway lines, here are four excursions you can easily organize starting from Hotel Byakko Nice ***, ideally located 5 minutes on foot from the Nice-Ville SNCF train station and 5 minutes from the tramway.
Èze Village
Perched 427 meters above sea level and just 12 km from Nice, Èze Village is a breathtaking fortified medieval site. Its Exotic Garden offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula. It is one of the most popular day trips on the French Riviera, quickly accessible from Nice city center.
From the Nice-Ville train station (5 minutes from the hotel), the TER train towards Monaco reaches Èze-sur-Mer in 15 minutes. The famous Nietzsche Path then connects the beach to the village via a 1-hour uphill hike. Once at the top, allow 1 to 2 hours to visit the Exotic Garden and explore the narrow village streets. Return via the same TER line from Èze-sur-Mer.
Note: The village is very busy in July and August. A morning visit (before 10 AM) is recommended to avoid large groups. The Exotic Garden requires an entry fee and is open year-round.
Saint-Paul-de-Vence
Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a 16th-century fortified village located west of Nice in the hinterland hills. It is world-renowned for its exceptionally preserved ramparts, numerous art galleries, and the Fondation Maeght, one of the region's leading modern art museums.
